[ to be frank, flat has never enjoyed self-defense classes. not in the clock tower and not now, even with the experience of a holy grail war under his belt.
he doesn’t see the merit of it! there’s nothing fun about just parrying punches or getting bruised up defending yourself. he can’t even do a flying kick—what’s the point if he can’t do a flying kick!?
waver has to (almost literally) drag him to the lesson…and he’ll get the rare sight of flat being annoyed, as if this were the biggest inconvenience in his life. yes, even worse than the murder attempts.
as soon as they stop, flat sits down on the ground, arms crossed against his chest defiantly like a mature 19 year old. ]
[Frankly, Waver would have participated more directly in them until now had he not been so frail the chances he would have collapsed in a gasping pile in the middle of them were high, and so weak, he would have never made it to that point, because any of his students would have destroyed him.
That changes now. There's almost pleasure in his eyes as he regards his sulking student as he stretches. They're outside and it's a lovely late summer afternoon, with just the tiniest bite of the fall to come. Being Caster, without those bodily limitations... Waver is savoring getting to teach this far more hands on.]
Pouting isn't going to gain you anything. But if you insist on starting off this way...
[An enemy cares not for temper tantrums, after all. They're still going to come.]
[ and waver grabs-- an afterimage! flat's a couple steps behind the illusion, looking something that's the intersection of flustered and mildly annoyed. ]
[It's terrifying how Waver one moment is grabbing that illusion, and in the next, has smoothly sweep himself low, too fast to be tracked by normal humans, leg out to smack Flat off his feet.
The expression isn't frustrated, even though the tone is. There's a lethal focus that has just been honed on the battlefield as a Servant. 5-D chess has begun.]
[ 5d chess with a shiba inu eating the pieces, perhaps. with reinforced eyesight, flat kicks himself off the ground before waver's leg can hit him, reinforcing his legs to push himself farther back. mid air, he points his finger down at the ground, charging magical energy and firing a gandr--or something like it--next to waver.
the miss is deliberate, more of a warning shot than anything else. unlike waver, flat doesn't want to fight, and would rather play defensively than parry his professor's attacks. unfortunately, there's no such thing as waiting it out when you're the one that's supplying the same magical energy that's being used, but flat is kind of hoping that waver will give up on this weird version of cat and mouse that they're playing. ]
[ he pauses, considering the answers that he could give waver. how can he graduate when he knows he won't make it out of the grail war alive? what even is out there waiting for him past the el melloi classroom?
The point is I would have never forced you to leave if you graduated. If you truly wanted to stay, there would have been a place. The point is that you self-sabotaging yourself isn't helping you there or here. It is keeping you from growing the way you want to.
[Steady, eyes locked unflinchingly. As a teacher, he let this slide too long perhaps. As a parent... far too long as well, he thinks, not dealing with Flat's abandonment complex, especially when it impacted the young man he was becoming.
And one day he wouldn't be with Flat, and to not address this would the worst failing he could ever make of his child.]
Then you can go back in time and tell that to another Flat, sir.
[ because there really is no reason for waver to be telling this to him, considering his situation. he grew as much as he could, and led the life that he wanted for as long as he could. even if the professor calls it self-sabotage, the truth is that flat is content, happy, just the way he is, and therefore doesn't care if it stunts his growth as a mage or not.
flat drops the defensive stance completely, placing his hands on his hips. two can play at the staring game, if that's the case. ]
But don't you think I already know all of this, Professor?
[Waver refuses to look away, as much as that line hurts, as much as it illustrates his failings. Flat's life isn't over here on this damned gem world, and back there... things aren't over yet either. Even though they seem to be.
... there's a point in fighting a pointless fight.]

Isn’t this a little sadistic, Professor? I’m pretty sure you’re enjoying it as much as that other one in you, if not more!
[ ughhhhhhh. ]
Isn’t there some sort of quote about battles being won before they start? There you go, you win. I forfeit.

Regardless, forfeiting doesn't get you out of lessons. Nice try, though.
Prepare yourself.

here.
